Why Rest Begins Before Bedtime

Refined hotel suite with linen bedding, natural wood, and warm neutral tones

A good night is shaped long before the lights go out. Morning daylight sets the body's clock. Movement builds a useful need for sleep. The timing of coffee, dinner, and the last difficult conversation all leave a trace.

Mara Vidal, Avelune's sleep practitioner, starts with the day rather than the pillow.

Give the day a clear edge

Quiet morning yoga practice in soft natural light

Sleep responds well to contrast. Step outside soon after waking, even on a grey morning. Keep demanding movement to daylight hours. Let the last two hours become recognisably different: lower light, a smaller meal, warmer water, fewer decisions.

At Avelune, evening turndown includes a carafe of lemon verbena and a card with the next day's sunrise. The details are modest. Their consistency is what matters.

A gentle evening sequence

Time before bed
Practice

Three hours
Finish dinner and alcohol
Allow digestion and temperature to settle
Two hours
Dim the room and set tomorrow aside
Reduce stimulation and unfinished decisions

Twenty minutes
Read, breathe, or write by low light
Give attention one quiet place to rest

There is no perfect ritual, and sleep should not become another performance. Choose one or two cues that fit ordinary life. Keep them long enough for the body to recognise them, then leave the clock alone.
